Gold Shines through for Villa Maria
It was neck and neck in the wine regions for Villa Maria at this year’s New Zealand International Wine Show with four gold medals each awarded to wines from Hawkes Bay and Marlborough.
With a total of nine gold’s in the Villa Maria stable it was another successful show for New Zealand’s Most Awarded Winery.
Now into its tenth year, the New Zealand International Wine Show is firmly established as the largest wine competition held in New Zealand each year with entries reaching over 2000 in a plethora of varieties from Australia, France, Spain, Italy, Chile, Argentina and Portugal.
“Marlborough and Hawkes Bay are consistently performing well for Villa Maria, it’s a great reflection of our winemakers and viticulturists,” says Alastair Maling, General Manager of Winemaking and Viticulture, who is thrilled with the results.
Highlights for Villa Maria included winning gold’s for Villa Maria Reserve Syrah 2012 coming from a particularly tough vintage in Hawkes Bay and Private Bin East Coast Pinot Gris 2014 which Maling says, “showcases a consistent delivery of a good New Zealand Pinot Gris.”
To accompany nine gold medals, Villa Maria was awarded twenty-five silver medals for a variety of their quality wines.
The competition, organised by Kingsley Wood of First Glass Wines of Takapuna, Auckland, gives recognition to wines from all over the world that are or will be sold in New Zealand.
“This year’s entries were at an all-time high due to the spectacular vintages of 2013 and 2014,” Bob Campbell MW, Chief Judge said.
An awards dinner will be held on 27th September to announce the trophy winners.
