This week yesterday's leaders and tomorrow's leaders met at Massey University's Albany campus to discuss what has
happened in Maori development since the 1984 Hui Taumata what is the path ahead to 2040, the 200th anniversary of the
Treaty of Waitangi. There was criticism that some of the most successful programmes coming out of the hui were quickly
shelved. In Kia Korero Mai on Saturday, Ngati Porou kaumatua Parekura Kupenga looks back to 1984 and the sort of changes
Maori saw at the flax roots, and remembers initiatives that may be due for a revival.

At Te Pae Roa 2040 academic Aroha Mead from Ngati Awa and Ngati Porou declared that if Maori want te reo to flourish,
they need to prioritise good speakers on marae over gender. Mabel Wharekawa Burt from Taurangamoana says kaore. On
Sunday in Kia Korero Mai she tells Eru Morgan why she believes it is up to each iwi, hapu, and whanau to decide whether
women should speak on their marae.
