Northland group awarded funding for coastal walkway extension
Northland’s Waipu Lions Club has been awarded an $8,000 grant from the New Zealand Walking Access Commission to support its work extending the Waipu Beach to Langs Cove Coastal Walkway.
The funding has been allocated from the Commission’s Enhanced Access Fund, which supports projects designed to enhance access to New Zealand's outdoors.
The grant will assist the Lions Club to complete the final section of the trail between Waterman’s Drive and Ding Bay.
New Zealand Walking Access Commission Chief Executive Mark Neeson said the trail would enable walkers to experience parts of the Bream Bay coastline that are otherwise not easily accessed.
“The coastal walkway trail is an asset to the Northland district and this will enhance it further. The Waipu Lions Club have formed excellent partnerships with the local authority and also the Bream Bay Coastal Care Trust who have agreed to maintain the track and keep it tidy and clear of litter.”
The Lions Club is one of two organisations nationally to be awarded funding from the Enhanced Access Fund in the first funding round of 2014-2015.
The other funding recipient is the Hikaui District Trust, which will receive $8,000 to support development of a walking and cycling trail between Pauanui and Tairua, on the Coromandel Peninsula.
Further funding for projects that enhance access to the outdoors is available throughout the year. Application forms, guidelines and further details about the 2014 application process are available in the Enhanced Access Fund section of the Commission’s website.
