‘Bombproof’ comedy takes capital by storm
Political comedy a sell-out success despite dirty politics - Matinees added
Is political satire still ‘a thing?’ Wellington audiences have responded with a resounding YES. Tired of dirty politics and with less than three weeks to go til Election Day, Destination Beehive has proved to be a smash hit at Circa Theatre with its hilarious take on New Zealand’s elected and electable and its biting commentary dressed up in delightful musical numbers.
“It’s been so enjoyable performing Destination Beehive to such sharp audiences. Wellingtonians really get every nuance,” says Pinky Agnew. Audience members have been impressed with the show’s ability to adapt nightly, due to Agnew and Parry’s cleverly structured script that allows for the changing political environment to be turned into up-to-the-minute comedy fodder.
‘We knew the show would be playing very close to election day, and that the campaign would be very volatile. Every night we have a segment called ‘Breaking News’, which has fresh new updates, and we also add in references throughout. It’s bombproof!’
In response to the demand, Circa Theatre have added two additional performances - Saturdays 13 and 20 September at 4pm. Given that tickets are flying out the door faster than John Key can say ‘at the end of the day’, we strongly encourage you to book yours now!
What the critics have been saying:
“It is a very enthusiastic feeling that permeates the resoundingly applauding audience. Someone mentioned afterwards that this show can never have a return season and it's only on for three weeks so book quickly to avoid disappointment. It's the hottest ticket in town.” John Smythe, Theatreview
“Every character presented is a delight... It all makes a great break from the seriousness of the election campaign.” Ewen Coleman, Dominion Post
ˆI laughed almost non stop for 80 minutes… This is one of those plays that I can recommend you see without hesitation. You’ll kick yourself if you miss it.” David Farrar, Kiwiblog
