WAIKATO MUSEUM SOLE NORTHERN VENUE FOR HOTERE CULBERT
5 SEPTEMBER 2014
Waikato Museum will be the only North Island venue to show HOTERE CULBERT, an exhibition featuring collaborative works from two of New Zealand’s greatest artists from 22 November to 1 March 2015.
The alliance between Ralph Hotere and Bill Culbert is recognised as one of this country’s most important and imaginative
artistic partnerships, and one which existed for more than two decades.
Waikato Museum Director, Cherie Meecham says this major survey exhibition is of special interest to Hamilton city.
“Hamiltonians have been privileged to have shared a large Ralph Hotere work on show permanently in the Founders Theatre
foyer.
”As individual artists, Hotere and Culbert have made extraordinary contributions to the arts in New Zealand, and this
exhibition from Dunedin Public Art Gallery brings together the largest ever gathering of works from this artistic
partnership.”
Ralph Hotere passed away in February 2013 and Bill Culbert was New Zealand’s selected artist at the 2013 Venice
Biennale.
HOTERE CULBERT presents a unique opportunity to see the major installations and collective vision of two of New
Zealand’s most highly acclaimed and recognised artists of the late twentieth century in a single presentation.
This spectacular exhibition draws works from major art collections throughout New Zealand including the Dunedin Public
Art Gallery, Auckland Art Gallery and Te Papa Tongarewa.
