Daffodil Race Day a winner for Cancer Society
The Racing Community believes it’s on to a winner following the inaugural Daffodil Race Day, raising $20,000 for the
Hawkes Bay Cancer Society.
Over a thousand punters attended the first Group One race of the season – traditionally known as Makfi Stakes Day.
The day proved to be a special one for prominent Waikato breeder Mark Chittick, who lost his wife Lisa to Leukemia
earlier this year, after leading mare ‘I Do’ crossed the line in the feature race of the day.
The Chittick family and winning trainer Alan Sharrock donated a percentage of their winnings to the cancer society,
Westbury stud donated a stallion service and all proceeds of admission were donated to the cause.
The TAB also provided a $1 donation for every Fixed Odds Win and place bet on ‘I Do’ and ‘Silent Achiever’ in Melbourne,
taking the total funds raised on Daffodil Race Day to $20,000.
Hawkes Bay Racing General Manager Jason Fleming says the success of Daffodil Race Day illustrates how many in the racing
community have been touched by cancer.
“From jockeys, to trainers, owners, breeders and broadcasters, we’ve had support from all corners of Racing
“I’m extremely proud to be part of an industry that has supported such a great cause, and I believe we can continue to
build on this event next season and into the future.”
Daffodil Race Day kicked off a spectacular month of Hawkes Bay racing, with the Windsor Park Plate on September 20 and
the iconic Livamol Spring Classic on October 4.
