Creative Kiwi celebs raise almost $13,000 for Cancer Society
Online bids for artworks in ANZ’s inaugural Daffodil Day Art Auction closed last night, raising almost $13,000 for the
Cancer Society.
Artist Shane Hansen’s work Daffodil Day achieved the top bid of $1790, followed by broadcaster Rawdon Christie’s cartoon at $1530. Foodies Nadia Lim and Al
Brown raised $1510 and $1320 respectively, and Man Booker Prize winner Eleanor Catton’s owl painting reached $1360.
The buyers of Catton’s work, who wanted to be anonymous, said they were “very impressed” with her painting.
“This is someone who is a very busy, very talented person. She’s made such a big mark on the international stage and for
her to take the time and effort into producing an artwork outside her skill set to raise money for charity is very
impressive.
“It’s a very attractive piece and we are looking forward to having it on the wall of our lounge.”
Fred Ohlsson, ANZ’s Managing Director Retail and Business Banking was “blown away by the creativity and generosity of
the artists.
“On behalf of everyone at ANZ and the Cancer Society, I want to sincerely thank all of those who so generously gave
their time to create these amazing pieces of art.”
“I’d also like to thank those who bought the works for their support of the Cancer Society.”
The brief for the artists was simple – there were no rules. They were asked to create an artwork which could be
auctioned; it could be a sketch, painting, pastel, collage, abstract or even a poem or verse.
The framed artworks were available for auction on Trade Me from August 18-27, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to
the Cancer Society.
