MEN’S DOUBLES PAIRING PUT UP GREAT FIGHT IN DENMARK
The final New Zealanders bowed out of the BWF World Badminton Championships in Denmark today but did so putting up an incredible fight, with Oliver Leydon-Davis and Kevin Dennerly-Minturn losing their opening round men’s doubles match in three close games.
As has been a familiar story through the event so far, the New Zealanders went down fighting against their higher ranked Singapore opponents, taking the first game 21-15 but were then unable to push home that advantage, losing the next two 16-21, 15-21 to end the New Zealand involvement in the tournament.
While none of the Kiwis were able to progress beyond the opening round, the experience alone has been vital for a largely young New Zealand team, many of whom will have an eye on the Rio Olympic Games in 2016, as well as other milestones along the way.
With many of the team funding their own way overseas to base themselves in amongst professional and semi-professional competitions in Asia and Europe (primarily in Denmark) and with the continued emergence of international tournaments at home (Fern Baby Auckland International next month, SKYCITY NZ Open in April 2015), the game and the players continue to put their hands up for greater recognition and funding. Despite the losses in Denmark, the closeness of many of the scores and the fight of the players involved augurs well for the future.
