2014 CLNZ/NZSA Research Grant Recipients
Copyright Licensing NZ and the NZ Society of Authors are delighted to announce the recipients of the 2014 CLNZ/NZSA
Research Grants. With research topics ranging from the effects of the ‘man drought’ in NZ to the Southern Ocean between
NZ and Antarctica, this year’s recipients will be taking writing to new and exciting places.
The Winners
Stout Research Centre Grant
Hannah August’s topic is 'Degrees of Loneliness', which focuses on the effects and consequences of the 'man drought' in New Zealand.
Open Research Grants
Alison Wong is writing an extended memoir provisionally entitled 'Pure Brightness', which describes the history of the Chinese in
New Zealand up to the present day, with a focus on her forebears' experiences.
Matt Vance is going to research and write a book about the Southern Ocean between New Zealand and Antarctica, and will focus on the
NZ heritage, natural history and cultural endeavours of its unique and extreme landscapes.
Adam Dudding is writing a fascinating biography on his father, Robin Dudding, “NZ's most significant and gifted editor of his
generation”.
The judges, Susanna Lyle, Paddy Richardson and David Hill, said that there were many deserving applicants, but a few
applications stood out.
The Stout Research Centre Grant is a $5000 award for either fiction or non-fiction, with the recipient undertaking
research at the Stout Research Centre at Victoria University of Wellington. While the Open Research Grant, is a $5000
award for project-based research. These grants are made available from CLNZ’s Cultural Fund, which provides funding for
cultural and social purposes in the interests of authors and publishers.
