AUCKLAND MUSEUM TO CELEBRATE PEACE DAY WITH A SPECIAL ‘ILLUMINATE’ FILM
Each year on the 21st September the world observes the International Day of Peace. In honour of this, Auckland War Memorial Museum will this year host ‘Illuminate: Peace Day’, a free film screening on its Northern Façade over three nights from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st September which celebrates peace within our community.
‘Illuminate: Peace Day’ will show some of Aotearoa’s most well-known personalities cradling an ancient symbol of peace in their hands, a white rose. Included as part of the work are; Sir John Kirwan, Oscar Kightley, Annie Crummer, Teuila Blakely, Denise L’Strange Corbet, Otis Frizzell and Jerome Kaino. Incorporating photography, film and audio, the larger-than-life images are intended to bring Aucklanders together to celebrate a global strive for peace.
The short film, especially commissioned by the Museum as part of its First World War Centenary Programme, has been directed and created by New Zealand photographer Stuart Robertson. Stuart has been photographing a single white rose in the hands of 10,000 people from every country on the planet as part of his global art project ‘Peace in 10,000 Hands’. When completed, the project will be toured worldwide as a provocative and insightful contemporary art exhibition.
“It has been an honour to create this special film for the Auckland Museum to mark this year’s International Day of Peace,” says Stuart Robertson. “We hope the film creates a conversation about peace and inspires our communities to come together on this important day.”
“We are really excited about the Museum’s ‘Illuminate’ film projections,” says Museum Director of Public Programmes & Capital Projects, Sally Manuireva. “We continually look for ways to extend beyond our walls and bring our local communities together. Using our iconic building in the domain as a canvas for this special film is great way to do this, by connecting with people in new ways and celebrating peace.”
The International Day of Peace is devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. The United Nations invites all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day, and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace.
