Treble Cone Book Officially Launched

The South Island’s largest ski area Treble Cone (Wanaka, New Zealand) officially launched the new book capturing the
fascinating, pioneering and at points turmoil ridden and impossible appearing history of the ski area last night at the
book’s launch in Wanaka.
The book, appropriately titled ‘Treble Cone’ was written by author Matt Conway who completed in depth interviews,
transcripts and writing over eight years, with the characters and pioneers who provided the passion, drive and courage
to develop Treble Cone.
Last night at Edgewater in Wanaka, a group of invited guests that included many of the early pioneers, directors, and
contractors who brought Treble Cone as a ski area, and in turn Wanaka as a ‘ski town’ to life, celebrated the launch of
the book.
Treble Cone ‘ski bum’ of 30 years Mark ‘Curly’ Thomas, who along with the late Sir Edmund Hillary wrote a forward for
the book, introduced how it came to be written, paid tribute to those behind its publication, and shared stories from
his early years skiing at Treble Cone.
Author Matt Conway, the man credited as ‘the godfather of Treble Cone’ and chairman of the Board through the ski areas
formative years (1970 until 1977) Murray Raffills, the man who bravely took on the contract to build the access road up
to Treble Cone Ken Harliwich, and his son in law who also worked on the building of the road, and maintains it to this
day Robert Duncan all took the microphone to share stories from Treble Cone.
The opportunity to have many of these original pioneers and stakeholders, and others key individuals in the shaping of
the ski area in the same room, sharing stories, and catching up made for a very enjoyable and special and memorable
occasion.
