MEDIA RELEASE: For Immediate Release
Short+Sweet Theatre offers full-flavoured works in bite-sized time slots
Short+Sweet Theatre 2014 swings into Auckland this month with 32 plays being performed across two weeks in 10-minute,
bite-size performances.
Short+Sweet Theatre 2014 kicks off at TAPAC (The Auckland Performing Arts Centre) on Tuesday 26 August and launches the
four-week Short+Sweet Festival Auckland 2014 featuring theatre, song and dance.
With no single performance being longer than 10 minutes and each being a complete work in itself, a night at Short+Sweet
is one where you won’t know what’s coming next, with a feast of styles and subjects. At the end of each night, the
audience is asked to vote for their favourites and the fortnight finishes with a gala of the best performances.
Short+Sweet Theatre 2014 features 32 plays by 35 different playwrights, dozens of directors and hundreds of actors,
curated by Artistic Coordinator Ahi Karunaharan who says the event offers a “platter” of various different plays under
one roof, by some of Auckland’s best talent.
“Short+Sweet is unique because it brings together various different practitioners and a wide variety of audiences to
present a whole range of works. I have enjoyed putting together the programme for the theatre festival, reading through
scripts, and meeting some of the most generous, courageous and fun theatre makers this city has to offer.”
In its entirety, the Short+Sweet Festival in Auckland also boasts 35 dance performances and nine ‘song’ performances
over four weeks, involving over 50 directors, 40 playwrights, 40 choreographers, nine composers and close to 300
performers.
Short+Sweet Theatre is at TAPAC, 100 Motions Rd, Western Springs in Auckland from 26 August to 7 September. Book at www.tapac.org.nz and find out more about the whole Short+Sweet Festival at www.shortandsweet.org.nz

About Short+Sweet
This simple format, started in Sydney in 2002 and spread throughout Australia. In recent years, Short+Sweet Festivals
have been established in New Zealand (Auckland), Asia (Malaysia, Singapore & India) and the United Arab Emirates (Dubai). It has also been successfully adapted to other performing arts in festival
formats, which are similarly being replicated in other countries.
The first Short+Sweet Theatre festival in New Zealand was presented in January of 2010 and has become an annual fixture
in Auckland’s performing arts calendar.
