headland Sculpture on the Gulf has announced the artists who will feature in the 7th biennial contemporary outdoor sculpture exhibition to be held on Waiheke Island in January and February 2015.
A spectacular two-kilometre coastal walkway on the Matiatia headland will feature 31 sculptures from a diverse group of artists, many of whom are new to the exhibition (including Suji Park, Scott Eady, Seung Yul Oh and Finnish duo Elin & Keino). Established artists David McCracken, Jeff Thomson and Virginia King will also return to Waiheke for the 2015 exhibition.
Over one-hundred-and-twenty submissions were considered by an independent selection panel comprising Kate Darrow (Hamilton Public Sculpture Trust), Sue Gardiner (Chartwell Trust) and Karl Chitham (Rotorua Museum Art Curator).
The selection panel members said, “It was extremely difficult to narrow down the list of finalists and considerable time was taken to ensure that visitors are going to have a unique and memorable experience.”
The 2015 exhibition will showcase many different styles of work in a wide variety of media, thereby allowing the audience to experience and interact with different forms of sculpture in new and exciting ways. The individual artist works will be set against the backdrop of the natural elements of this unique headland location to deliver new directions in outdoor sculpture and show innovative responses to the land.
headland Sculpture on the Gulf board Chair Margaret Malaghan says, “The selectors have done a fantastic job to ensure the artistic and curatorial integrity of New Zealand’s premier outdoor sculpture event.”
headland Sculpture on the Gulf would like to thank all those who entered and extend our congratulations to the finalists. We look forward to seeing their work realised in the New Year.
