THE ART OF ORGANISING ARTISTS
Artists no longer living on the 'boanz' of their arse!
B.O.A.N.Z. - Business of Art New Zealand
18 October - 25 October 2014
Petone Library, Community Room, 7 Britannia Street, Petone.
Sandy Rodgers, wants to give back to the community all that she has learnt from over 18 years of experience being a
professional artist.
Rodgers has created a business course especially for artists. " I wanted to do something to help locals who were
practicing their art form but felt they might be lacking the knowledge or confidence to actively promote themselves and
their work."
Rodgers received a business grant for her art career back in 2007 after having been told throughout the lead up business
course that "Artists don't get the business grant" time and again. This only fuelled the fire and after some dedicated
research and a lot of hard graft a business plan was produced which was accepted instantly and the grant was awarded.
"My aim now is to help artists from all walks of life to present their skills and abilities to the public in a positive
and beneficial way with their integrity intact. I want art practitioners to be comfortable in the guise of a ‘business
person’ and to understand the basic skills necessary to make a sustainable income by doing what it is that they are most
passionate about."
Rodgers has managed art galleries in New Zealand and London and her combination of experience from that of the Galleries
point of view alongside 18 years curating, managing and exhibiting her own work she knows what the expectations are for
artists.
"After having been on the receiving side of portfolios and proposals and having managed and co-ordinated so many
exhibitions I realised that having a creative talent just isn't enough these days, if you want to make and grow your
income from art you need to be organised, know what you are doing and where you are going. My goal now is do my utmost
to help and support fledgling and emerging artists take the next step into an arts career with confidence."
