The Eggner Trio Returns with Berlin Philharmonic Principal Viola Amihai Grosz
Wellington concert: Sunday 14 September
Vienna’s acclaimed family ensemble, The Eggner Trio, returns to New Zealand in September for a 10-centre tour, bringing with them Berlin Philharmonic principal viola player Amihai Grosz.
The tour is part of Chamber Music New Zealand’s 2014 Kaleidoscopes season and opens in Wellington on Sunday 14 Septemberbefore heading to Hamilton, Auckland, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Napier, Nelson, Dunedin, Invercargill and finishing in Christchurch on Thursday 25 September.
The Eggner Trio has visited New Zealand several times in the past decade and have become a firm favourite with Chamber Music New Zealand audiences nationwide. On this tour they will perform favourite piano trios and quartets and also feature Dunedin composer Anthony Ritchie’s Oppositions for Piano Quartet.
“We’re absolutely delighted to be welcoming the Eggners back to New Zealand,” Chamber Music New Zealand chief executive Euan Murdoch said. “Georg, Florian and Christoph have become special friends and adding the sensational Amihai Grosz to the programme will be extra special.”
Based in Vienna, the Eggners have a strong connection to the Antipodes. In 2003, they won the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, launching their international career – and on their last visit to New Zealand in 2011, the trio played a concert as a fundraiser towards the Christchurch earthquake recovery efforts. Now, on their fourth visit to New Zealand, their name is firmly established as one of the most exhilarating ensembles of our time.
The concert begins with Mozart's second piano quarter in E flat, followed by Schumann’s hyper-passionate Piano Trio No 3 in G minor, ending with Dvořák’s Bohemian, folk-influenced Piano Quartet No 2. Anthony Ritchie’s Oppositions for Piano Quartet also feature.
The Eggner Trio and Amihai Grosz perform at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington on Sunday 14 September. Tickets are available through Ticketek 0800 842 538 or www.ticketek.co.nz
