Wot songs get you travelling?
Wotif’s top travel inspiring tunes
Auckland – 15 August 2014
Thinking of leaving on a jet plane? Can’t wait to get on the road again or dreaming of a summer holiday? You’re not alone, almost one in three Kiwis have been inspired to travel by a song, according to the latest survey of 2,472 New Zealand respondents by leading travel website Wotif.
Wotif spokesperson, Kirsty La Bruniy said that 32% of respondents revealed they were inspired to travel by music.
“John Denver’s hit, Leaving on a Jet Plane was voted the top travel-inspiring song, followed by New York, New York and On the Road Again. Rounding out the top five of classic travel songs were The Eagle’s Hotel California and Cliff Richard’s Summer Holiday,” Ms La Bruniy said.
“45% of the songs that inspired people to travel were about a particular destination, and a huge 78% of respondents had been, or were planning to go there.
“With so many songs featuring the Big Apple, it makes sense that New York was the most travel-inspiring destination, followed by California and San Francisco.
“Although half of respondents inspired to travel by a song planned to take their partners with them, a relaxing holiday (24%) came out on top and only 10% were seeking a romantic break.
“Adventure or outdoor holidays (16%) and exploring new cultures (16%) were also high on the list of holiday types inspired by music.”
Ms La Bruniy said songs can connect us with fond holiday memories or remind us of home.
“Of the 68% who associated a song with a particular holiday memory, it was overwhelmingly a good memory,” Ms La Bruniy said.
“It’s no surprise, that Pharrell’s Happy is the song that is currently at the top of their holiday playlist.
“When asked what song most reminded people of New Zealand, Slice of Heaven made it to number one on the list, followed by Pokarekare Ana.
“Kiwis also like to take a piece of New Zealand away with Lorde’s Royals and Dave Dobyn’s Loyal taking out spots two and three for their holiday playlist.”
