New Zealand Ease through Opening Team Match
The New Zealand Badminton team marched comfortably through their opening Group C Mixed Teams match at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games overnight NZT, proving too strong as expected for Guernsey winning 5-0 at the Emirates Arena.
While none of the New Zealand combinations were taken to three games in any of the matches, Guernsey did fight hard and offer the Kiwis a worthwhile opening encounter to ease their way into the tournament.
Jo Wu was most impressive on the score line, taking just 22 minutes to defeat his opponent 21-6, 21-8 before heading off for more practice and recovery knowing that this is just the start of a rigorous schedule.
All the Kiwis were impressive though, with Michelle Chan winning her singles and then pairing with Maddie Stapleton to take out the women’s doubles. Oliver Leydon-Davis partnered sister Susannah to an easy mixed doubles win before joining his regular doubles partner Kevin Dennerly-Minturn for another comfortable win in men’s doubles.
New Zealand are in Group C with Scotland, Seychelles and Guernsey and play the host nation on day two (Fridaynight NZT).
