Avoiding disasters with old buildings – 10 do’s and don’ts
An internationally renowned specialist in building materials conservation will hold a free public lecture at the Jubilee
Building in Parnell on Monday August 11 (7pm) in association with Heritage New Zealand.
David Young, whose talk is entitled Avoiding Disasters – 10 things not to do when looking after old buildings, will share some of the do’s and don’ts of heritage conservation based on his experience gained over 30 years in the
analysis and repair of historic buildings and sites.
“David also undertakes a range of teaching and training activities including running a summer school programme at the
University of Canberra, and teaching the conservation of architectural materials at the University of Melbourne,” says
Heritage New Zealand’s Auckland Coordinator, Judy Grieve
He has also contributed to international courses on wood conservation in Norway, and has run short courses on building
conservation in South Africa and New Zealand.
“David is an authority in his field, and a great communicator. Anybody who has an interest in built heritage – or who
owns a heritage building – should come along for an informative and entertaining talk,” she says.
David Young will be in Auckland holding a week-long course introducing the fundamentals of building conservation for
people with a professional involvement in heritage.
Some of the material covered in his week-long course will also be touched on in his public lecture – including the
conservation and maintenance of different building materials.
Bookings are essential as places are limited. To book, contact Heritage New Zealand’s Auckland office, Ph 09-307-9920 or
