There’s an election campaign on, and NZ On Screen has relaunched its comprehensive Politics Collection of documentaries, interviews and other memorable moments from New Zealand’s political history.
The website first curated the collection prior to the last election in 2011, and is relaunching it in the lead-up to this year’s polling day with some significant new titles, including the award-winning Frontline documentary Five Days in July (about the devaluation crisis after the 1984 election), and an early Austin Mitchell interview with Prime Minister Keith Holyoake.
Highlights from the collection include the infamous 1976 Simon Walker interview with Prime Minister Rob Muldoon; star British TV interviewerDavid Frost with Norman Kirk in 1973; and the 1984 TVNZ Leaders' Debate between Muldoon and David Lange in 1984, with the immortal “I love you, Mr Lange” line.
Other historic moments featured in the collection include Muldoon’s “high-spirited” snap election announcement from a parliamentary corridor in 1984, and New Zealand Party leader Bob Jones punching TV reporter Rod Vaughan a year later in 1985.
Significant political documentaries in the collection include a Lookout current affairs documentary on Jones’ New Zealand Party election campaign; Reluctant Revolutionary, the biography of Prime Minister David Lange; and Alister Barry’s acclaimed The Hollow Men, made in 2008.
