FWC a Record-Breaker for TAB

Betting on the Football World Cup 2014 tournament has smashed records for the TAB and pushed it over the $2 Billion revenue mark for the first time in history.

Punters spent $32.2 million during Football World Cup 2014, making it the TAB’s biggest ever betting event – outstripping the $30.2 million wagered on the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

New Zealand Racing Board CEO (Acting) Stewart McRobie says the record turnover results are great for the business as well as sport and racing in New Zealand.

“There are not many companies in New Zealand that turn over more than $2 billion. It reflects the combined efforts of our associated industries and staff and is something we are immensely proud of.”

The tournament also attracted more than 10,000 new customers to the TAB.

“At times it felt like every person in New Zealand was overcome with football fever and having a flutter!”

“Pleasingly the record-breaking Football World Cup results will also provide a financial boost for football in New Zealand, with a percentage of betting turnover and profit going directly back into the game,” says McRobie.

The TAB will be giving $560,000 to New Zealand Football, its cut of money spent by punters on the tournament.

New Zealand Football CEO Andy Martin says the windfall will allow them to continue to grow the game from a grassroots level.

“These funds will allow us to continue to support the structures we have in place as we seek to raise the importance of football in the New Zealand sporting landscape,” says Martin.

The TAB’s attention now shifts to another great one off Football event – the Football United Tour, hosted by the Wellington Phoenix.

The tour will see the Phoenix take on West Ham United at Eden Park on 23rd July, followed by a double header at Westpac Stadium on 26th July featuring Sydney FC taking on West Ham United and Wellington Phoenix taking on Newcastle.
