A residential workshop on publishing – for writers
The Michael King Writers’ Centre is organising a major residential workshop in Auckland for writers to explore what is
happening in publishing.
The workshop will feature many of New Zealand’s leading publishers and publishing experts. It is being developed for
mid-career and established authors. There will be fewer than 30 participants, so sessions a very interactive, and there
will be almost as many panellists and speakers. The final session will be a publishers’ lunch, with representatives from
the country’s leading publishing houses.
Michael King Writers’ Centre deputy chair Bob Ross said publishing is in a state of flux and many writers, even
experienced authors, are considering self-publishing or independent publishing as well as traditional publishing.
“Publishing is going through a period of major change, both in New Zealand and around the world. The business landscape
has changed, with publishing houses consolidating and digital technology bringing new publishing formats.
“This three-day live-in workshop will help writers learn to navigate the maze that publishing has become.”
Publishing Now is the sixth annual residential workshop organised by the Michael King Writers’ Centre. It will be held
at Vaughan Park in Long Bay from November 1 to 3.
It will cover what’s happening in publishing in New Zealand and the world, book retailing, digital developments and
ebooks, self-publishing, dealing with publishers, contracts, marketing, sales and distribution. Speakers and panellists
include international publishing expert Michael Moynahan, who has headed major publishing houses in New Zealand,
Australia and India.
Applications are now open and places will be limited. The residential workshop is developed with the support of the ASB
Community Trust. Applications close on August 18.
