Tell us which Matariki entry you like best

Budding writers and talented artists have been busy creating their entries for our Matariki Short Story/Comic Strip Competition and now we need your help to pick the People’s Vote winner.

As part of the Waikato District Matariki Festival, Waikato District Libraries ran the competition which was centred around the following seven words - Grow/Whakatupu(-ria), Celebrate/Whakanui, Star/Whetu, Dark/Po, Eyes/Karu, Feast/Hakari and Vehicle (eg car, train, boat)/Waka.

Waikato District Council General Manager Customer Support Sue Duignan said more than 60 entries had been received.

“The level of interest in this competition has been fantastic, as well as the standard of entries. We certainly have a crop of very talented creative people in our district.”

Ms Duignan said the panel of judges, consisting of Paul Bradley (Creative Waikato), Pura Hope (Te Wharekura o Rakaumanga) and Pareoranga Te Kata (Train Me) had their work cut out for them choosing first and second place in each category.

“It’s going to be a tough job to pick the winners, so we want to hear from the public as well.”

People can cast their People’s Vote simply by visiting the Council’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/WaikatoDistrictCouncil and liking their favourite entry.

Entries will be displayed as images in an album on the page from Monday 14 to Friday 18 July. The entry with the most likes at the end of the week will be crowned People’s Vote winner and will receive a $50 book voucher.

Prize giving will be held at 3.30pm on Tuesday 29 July in the Council Chambers at the Ngaruawahia Office, where the winning entries will be displayed.
