Lake Wanaka Secures
GODZone Adventure for 2015
New Zealand’s most prestigious adventure race, GODZone, is set to take place in the majestic and scenic location of Wanaka.
Announcing the official dates and host location for the 2015 event, GODZone Race Director Warren Bates says Wanaka provides the perfect platform for the expedition length race that attracts hundreds of competitors from all over the world.
“As an adventure racing location, you couldn't ask for much more than the Lake Wanaka region. It's a destination that really promotes the outdoor lifestyle, has unbelievably good access to a whole host of adventurous activities and enjoys a thriving sporting community.”
The 2015 GODZone adventure race will kick off on the 27th February and run to the 9th March, with teams of four racing non stop over seven days in and around the Lake Wanaka region. Mr Bates says Lake Wanaka Tourism has welcomed the event and support from the whole district has been overwhelmingly positive.
“ We are delighted that Lake Wanaka Tourism has partnered with us to accommodate GODZone and we know our competitors are going to love visiting the town of Wanaka and the entire Lake Wanaka region. They will discover the stunningly beautiful terrain is also uniquely challenging with a backdrop of mountains and glacier fed lakes and rivers.”
Lake Wanaka Tourism General Manager James Helmore says he is delighted to support GODZone and believes the event will bring significant benefits to the region.
“GODZone is a major sporting event that draws both national and international attention and we welcome that to Wanaka. Adventure racing fits perfectly with the adventurous nature of our community and our spectacular natural playground providing the backdrop.
We have everything here from canyoning to mountain biking, mountaineering, and kayaking through to skydiving. I’m sure many of our local adventure racers will be excited about racing in their own backyard, and those not competing will be as excited to discover just where the teams will be heading once the course is revealed next year.”
