Wellington helps kick off Commonwealth Ceilidh
More than 150 Wellington people were among the first in the world to celebrate the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games
at a global Scottish dance event.
The Commonwealth Ceilidh relay travelled 29,370kms in 24 hours, beginning in New Zealand before ending in Hawaii. Dances
took place in 65 locations and five continents around the world.
The Wellington ceilidh was one of several held in the country but the only one directly linking sport and dance. Ignite
Sport and Lower Hutt Scottish Country Dance Club partnered to hold the region’s event on Saturday 21 June, at St Oran’s
College Hall.
“It was a fun evening and great to see so many young people enjoying and learning the dances,” says Ignite Sport’s
Coordinator Kevin Goldsbury. “The ceilidh provided something for everyone, all ages and abilities.”
Lower Hutt Scottish Country Dance Club was keen to partner with Ignite Sport to support the organisation’s youth
development work with young people.
“At Ignite Sport we use sport and recreation to engage and impact young people and communities. The ceilidh has a
similar goal – to learn, dance, have fun and stay fit,” says Kevin.
