Koha to Kiwi illustrators and writers - 2014 LIANZA Librarians’ Choice!
Librarians will get an opportunity to vote for their favourite finalist as part of the 2014 LIANZA Children’s Book
Awards celebrations, proudly sponsored by HELL Pizza.
Pene Walsh, convenor of judges for the Children’s Book Awards, says “I am always intrigued to know what our peers will
choose for this award. Whilst many of our colleagues may not interact with children on a daily basis all librarian’s
lean toward a common thread of sharing the right information with the right person and this award is a way the whole
profession can get together for a bit of fun”.
Public and school librarians make recommendations to customers on a daily basis but librarians working in corporate,
government, tertiary and health libraries are encouraged to have their say too.
This year the voting for the Librarians Choice will be run as a ‘NZ Book Idol’. For five weeks the individual categories
will be promoted, with voting at the end of each week. The top two selected from each category will carry through to the
final voting week, with an overall winner announced at the awards ceremony.
Pene says “authors tend to have a love of libraries from an early age and this relationship usually endures throughout
their career. To present a special medal that clearly says this is ‘New Zealand librarians’ favourite children’s book of
the year’ is our koha back to a great Kiwi illustrator or writer.”
The LIANZA Children’s Book Awards winners will be announced at the ceremony on Monday 4th August at National Library of
New Zealand - Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa.
