Illume Festival of Lights - Cheap Ferry Deals From Auckland
Illume is a free, family-friendly event in the first week of the school holidays, where Coromandel Town will be lit up in a winter festival of lights.
For nine nights in July, beginning on Friday July 4th and running through to Sunday July 12th there will be creative lighting illuminating our historic architecture, massive projections turning the town's walls into large colourful screens - telling stories of our cultural, natural and artistic heritage, along with interactive activities for kids of all ages. There will be lanterns, fire, reflections, shadows, street performance and dance.
And if you're in Auckland, we've got a great deal where you can start your Illume experience on board the 360 Discovery Ferry for $79 per adult return. This brings you from Downtown Auckland to the Coromandel, departing 8.45am Friday Auckland 4 July and returning 4.30pm from Coromandel Town Sunday 6 July.
And if you want to upgrade that deal you can pay $132 per adult for the Ferry and the Coromandel Explorer will also take you on a tour which includes going on the Driving Creek Railway and a guided kauri forest experience with Coromandel Adventures.

"This offer gives people from Auckland the chance to get to our Opening Night on Friday 4 July which includes the “Big Turn On” from 6pm, in the Samuel James Reserve," says Brenda Kelsey, one of the event organisers. "This is when the switch will be flicked and the main street of Coromandel town and selected heritage buildings will be illuminated," she says.
There will then be a street light parade with floats making their way down the main street.
The festival includes:
• Free music in the street
• Large and epic projections, transforming the town's walls into big 3d screens
• Fire dancers and fire breathers
• A fun and interactive “black light” tunnel. With fluorescent face painting this will be an awesome attraction for children and adults alike.
• DRIVING CREEK RAILWAY NIGHT TOURS. This 15in gauge railway winds through native bush with tunnels and viaducts just 5 minutes out of Coromandel Town. It is also the home of iconic artist Barry Brickell.
Set against this backdrop, on most nights of the festival there's special feature events including
• A free street concert on Saturday 5th July, featuring bands Bond Street Bridge and Mamaku
• Lanterns in the park on Thursday 10th July
• Twisty Twins performing on the Friday 11th July
• D.Js/M.C's with street performers on Saturday 12th July
