Red Bull Flying Bach debuts in New Zealand
Breakdancing world champions Flying Steps visualise Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier
Shattering the boundaries between classical and urban art forms, Red Bull Flying Bach fuses the elegant masterpieces of visionary 18th century German Baroque composer, Johann Sebastian Bach, with the unrestricted and explosive dance style of four times world champion breakdance crew, Flying Steps.
Following the sold-out 2013 World Tour, Red Bull Flying Bach will bring its powerhouse production to Auckland’s ASB Theatre, for New Zealand’s first-ever shows. Note by note, step by step; the ultimate clash of cultures will inspire audiences at three extraordinary shows, debuting on September 4 – 6 of this year.
Head spins driven by the keys of a piano, power moves following the rhythm of Bach’s fugues: Red Bull Flying Bach turns the worlds of classical music and breakdancing upside down. As piano, harpsichord and electronic beats are compounded with freezes and ballet steps, a storyline that revives and visualises Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier is created, providing art in motion that delivers an unforgettable experience for the audience.
Choreographer and mastermind behind Red Bull Flying Bach, Vartan Bassil, says Flying Steps first visit to Australia in 2013 was a huge success, and the crew are thrilled to make their first appearance in New Zealand.
“Red Bull Flying Bach really offers something unique – it introduces classical music to the street scene, but also allows high art fans to experience the best in urban dance,” says Basil.
Opposites attract. With Red Bull Flying Bach, breakdance legends Flying Steps and artistic director Christoph Hagel have proven that breakdancing and the music of Bach fit perfectly.
“The sharpness and freshness of Bach’s preludes and fugues work faultlessly with the dance style of the Flying Steps,” says Hagel. “When this type of breakdance comes together with the sound of piano and harpsichord, the incredible masterpieces of Bach are brought to life and made relevant for a modern audience.”
Tickets can be purchased today, June 9, from TicketMaster. Visit www.redbull.co.nz/flyingbach for more information.
