What does it feels like to become a millionaire overnight? After years of asking themselves the same question, one lucky
Papakura couple have won $2 million with Lotto First Division.
As regular Lotto players, checking their tickets on a Sunday morning was a normal part of their weekend routine.
“The first thing I say to my husband on a Sunday morning is ‘Do you feel like a millionaire today?’ then he jumps out of
bed and checks our tickets,” explained one of the winners.
“Normally the answer is ‘not today’ – but we couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw all six numbers in a row on our
ticket – it put us in a spin!”
Because it was Queen’s birthday weekend, the winners had to wait until Tuesday to claim their prize at the Lotto office
in Auckland.
“It felt like a really long weekend, that’s for sure – we didn’t let the ticket out of our sight,” laughed the winner.
“No matter how many times we checked the ticket, we were still kind of waiting for that slap back into reality.
“But when the Lotto staff said ‘congratulations, you’re now millionaires’, our lives changed in a heartbeat.”
Now that they know the win is real, they’ve started thinking about how they will spend it.
“I haven’t mentioned it to my husband yet, but we’ll definitely be stopping by the jewellers on the way home today to
pick up something special to remember the occasion,” laughed the winner, who wishes to remain anonymous.
“Also, we have a holiday planned for the end of the year, so we’ll definitely be adding some upgrades on to that.
“Other than a few indulgences, we’re going to be really sensible with the winnings. We’ll pay off the mortgage and
really set ourselves up for retirement – and the rest of our lives!”
