The Sir Peter Blake Trust has issued a call to action to Kiwis to get their red socks ready for 2014 Leadership Week and to help the Trust celebrate its 10th birthday.

This year’s Sir Peter Blake Leadership Week theme is ‘Make it happen’ and the Trust is hoping to see Kiwis, throughout the country, making it happen in their town or region, by getting involved in a Leadership Week event, from 27 June to 4 July.

Sir Peter Blake Trust CEO, Shelley Campbell, says that 2014 is also a particularly special year for the Trust, as it will be celebrating its 10th birthday.

“In June 2004, the Sir Peter Blake Trust was established with the aim of continuing the legacy of one of New Zealand’s greatest leaders, Sir Peter Blake. Since its inception, more than 134,000 pairs of lucky red socks have been sold, an enduring symbol of inspiring leadership and a country united together for a great cause; two Young Blake Expeditions and 11 Youth-Enviro-Leader Forums have been held; more than 26,000 Kiwi kids have been inspired during Dream Team sessions, with 518 Dream Team leaders taking part in this inspirational leadership programme; 736 Young Leader Awards have been presented at more than 475 primary and intermediate schools nationwide; 64 outstanding Kiwi leaders have been recognised with Sir Peter Blake Leadership Awards and Blake Medals; and close to 1800 Leadership Week events have been attended by tens of thousands of people throughout New Zealand.

2014 Sir Peter Blake Leadership Week begins with the annual Sir Peter Blake Leadership Awards, on Friday 27 June, where the prestigious Blake Medal will be presented, along with six Blake Leader Awards, and concludes with Red Socks Day onFriday 4 July.

Ms. Campbell says, “The 2014 Sir Peter Blake Leadership Week theme is ‘Make it happen’ and our favourite Kiwi heroes, from Sir Peter Jackson to Kate Sheppard, Sir Edmund Hillary to Jean Batten, knew that the hardest part of any big dream or project, as Sir Peter Blake wrote in his final entry aboard Seamaster, is to begin. And what our greatest leadership legends had in common was that they all had the spirit, drive and determination not just to talk or dream about it but also to get out there and make it happen,” she says.

“It’s our hope that organisations throughout New Zealand, from councils to business, clubs and schools will again be busy arranging their own Leadership Week events. Whether the activity is large or small, the important thing is just to get involved, help show our young people what great leadership looks like, take the opportunity to celebrate awesome leadership in our communities and share the stories of great Kiwi leaders, like Sir Peter Blake, and most importantly to have fun!”
