Twenty Two Artists to Exhibit at Launch of 2014 NZ Art Show

Twenty-two artists have been confirmed to exhibit at the launch of the 2014 NZ Art Show. The launch, which will take place at the Museum Art Hotel on Monday, 26 May, provides the Show’s Friends and Sponsors with an exclusive preview of the upcoming Show.

The NZ Art Show has invited a mix of established and emerging artists, talented up-and-coming artists, from Auckland in the north to Wanaka in the South, with one artist currently based in Melbourne. The media represented is equally diverse including painting, mixed media, photography, textiles, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture and drawing. All the artworks exhibited at the launch are for sale on the night.

NZ Art Show Executive Director, Carla Russell said, “This year’s Show will be our eleventh and we’re planning to start our second decade on a high note. The quality and diversity of the art chosen by our selection panel for this year’s Show is of an exceptional standard as will be evident at the launch.”

The exhibiting artists include Award winners or finalists at previous shows and amongst them are: Wellington printmaker Patrick Hickley, winner of a $2,500 NZ Art Show Emerging Artist Award last year; Melbourne-based photographer Harry Culy, a Signature Piece Art Award finalist at the 2013 Show; well-known Wanaka mixed media artist, Fiona Campbell who established the Real Art Roadshow; popular Waiheke Island sculptor, Sally Smith; 2013 Signature Piece Art Award finalist and Wellington mixed media artist, Rebecca Phillips; Wellington bronze sculptor Brett Rangitaawa; and Waikato ceramic artist, Fiona Tunnicliffe.

This year’s NZ Art Show will be held July 25 – 27 in the TSB Bank Arena, Queens Wharf on the Wellington waterfront, with the Show’s opening Gala Evening being held on Thursday, 24 July.

Carla Russell said, “Over the past decade, the NZ Art Show has become an established event on the arts calendar, raising both the profile of original New Zealand art and making art more accessible to a wider audience. This is consistent with our vision of all and homes and workplaces owning an original New Zealand artwork.

“The Show also provides the means for emerging artists to become established and this year, once again, four students studying visual arts at New Zealand art schools will be eligible to win a $2,500 Emerging Artist Award at this year’s NZ Art Show. The Emerging Art Award finalists will have a dedicated gallery at this year’s Show, and we look forward to announcing more about our 2014 Show at the launch.”
