Pacific music gig brings international flavour.
PASIFIKANA - a post Vodafone Pacific Music Awards event on Friday 9 May, at The Tuning Fork (Vector Arena) brings
international musicians Kalaga’la from New Caledonia who will collaborate for one night only with New Zealand Hip Hop
icon King Kapisi (DJ set), Spoken Word artists Daren Kamali, Grace Taylor and Ole Maiava, from Christchurch - Pacific
Underground and from Dunedin - reggae artists ‘Koile.
Kalaga’la is on New Zealand soil to celebrate being finalists at the Vodafone Pacific Music Awards in the newest
category the FLAVA Best International Group. The New Caledonia group that consists of members of Wallis and Futuna
origin, are up against artists Fiji and Spawnbreezie - popular US based musicians who have had plenty of commercial
airplay on New Zealand’s Pacific and iwi radio stations.
Regardless of results the group being finalists has brought encouragement from their New Caledonia supporters, family
and networks bringing them to Auckland to attend and perform at the ceremony.
The PASIFIKANA gig gives Kalaga’la the opportunity to continue collaborating with artists after previous exchanges both
here and in New Caledonia. Patrice Kaikilekofe who leads the band Kalaga’la is also a well known visual artist who
trained here in New Zealand. He has continued networking with musicians at festivals and exhibitions all over the
Pacific.
“We’d met with musicians Ole Maiava, Tigilau Ness, ‘Koile and Pacific Underground previously in Auckland, Christchurch,
New Plymouth and the Solomon Islands. And we’ve also hosted them in New Caledonia. We’re honoured to have the
opportunity to jam again at PASIFIKANA this time joined by King Kapisi (DJ set), Grace Taylor, Ole Maiava and Daren
Kamali” says Patrice.
PASIFIKANA is artists sharing music of Pacific origin regardless of where each artist resides - New Zealand or New
Caledonia, South Island or North Island. The origins of the collective groups are Wallis & Futuna, Uvea, Samoa, Tonga, Tokelau, Cook Islands, Fiji, New Zealand and France.
“…so our music has an international Pacific flavour. We always look forward to jamming again together.” Says Patrice.
