Squirm play a rare show with Rough Church in Lyttelton;
and Robert Scott and the Shifting Sands join up in Port Chalmers
Underground Christchurch legends Squirm announce a very rare live show this Friday May 2 when they support USA band Rough Church at Tommy Chang’s in Lyttelton. Such is their 20-something year legend that they've even had a film made about them -
Gone With The Weird; made by NZ filmmaker Simon Ogston (who also directed the Skeptics' documentary 'Sheen of Gold'). It's a moving and entertaining story that is in large part a tribute to Squirm's late
guitarist Michael Brassel (aka Michael J. Hex).
Los Angeles musical lynchpin - and passionate NZ music fan - Greg Franco’s band Rough Church play the first show of their South Island visit this Friday night. Greg is marking the 10-year anniversary of his New
Zealand collaborations, first sparked by a spell here recording with Robert Scott and David Kilgour of the Clean in Dunedin in 2004.
Rough Church have just released a new album on the Powertool label – capturing the spirit of our busy modern lives, it’s
titled ‘46 Missed Calls (Live at KPFK)’, recorded half live at EStudio and the other half recorded during a live
broadcast on LA radio station KPFK-FM, on the Mark Torres radio show (http://www.kpfk.org/). A number of the new songs feature lyrics penned by New Zealand poet and Greg’s friend David Eggleton.
Rough Church live showcases the considerable talents of Kaitlin Wolfberg on violin and keyboards and Andy Sykora on
drums/percussion. Rough Church have also have a local connection – for this tour they will be joined by Wellingtonian
Kedron Parker on bass, who has shared countless bills with Franco for many years in L.A. before she moved to Wellington
in 2003. Parker is currently known for her public art sound installation Kumutoto Stream which runs in the Woodward
Street pedestrian tunnel in the Wellington CBD.
Rough Church's friend and New Zealand music luminary Robert Scott joins the bill on at Chick's Hotel on Saturday May 3; along with local favourites the Shifting Sands.
