Visit by English Premium League players welcomed
British High Commissioner to New Zealand Vicki Treadell said she was delighted that two of Britain’s top football teams were coming to New Zealand in July.
“Newcastle United and West Ham are hugely popular and have large followings right across the world. It’s a great coup for the Phoenix team and the Wellington City Council to get these two teams to play in New Zealand.
It will be good for the sport, good for football fans and good for the local economy.”
Mrs Treadell said her High Commission team was already looking at ways to maximise the visit both in Auckland and Wellington.
The Phoenix management estimate the visitors are likely to generate around $15 million worth of business during their visit. Meanwhile the English Premier League is a great export earner for the UK as well as important for the UK's own regional economies.
