Volunteers to Pack Stadium with Community Spirit

Volunteers to Pack Stadium with Community Spirit

Media Release
22 April 2014

The CBS Arena in Christchurch will be packed with community spirit when the EasiYo Tactix play the Northern Mystics on Monday 28 April, at 7.40 p.m.

The crowd will include volunteers and staff from more than 120 Canterbury and South Canterbury organisations – ranging from Girl Guides to Special Olympics North Canterbury, Rolleston Volunteer Fire Brigade, Canterbury’s Men Centre and Living Springs Trust.

Z Energy has given more than 2300 tickets to the home game to community workers and volunteers as part of its ‘Good in the Hood’ programme. Z Energy’s Canterbury retailers Hamish Wright, Jeff Waghorn and John Allen expect nearly half the stadium to be taken up with community group’s volunteers and their families.

“At Z we like to support groups and individuals doing great stuff in our communities,” Christchurch retailer John Allen said.

“Our ‘Good in the Hood’ programme gives a lot of support to groups doing good in our neighbourhoods, but this time we wanted to give back directly to the volunteers and workers who give so much to our community every day,” he said.

“It’ll be a fun, action packed night that acknowledges the important work done by Canterbury’s community organisations, and particularly their staff and volunteers. As well as the netball, there’ll be a few extra activities to say a big thanks to all the people who make our community tick.”

Netball Mainland CEO, Brigit Hearn is fully supportive of the initiative.

“We are delighted to partner with Z Energy to recognise the wonderful work that is done by so many voluntary groups in our community and that the support we receive from the crowd will spur the EasiYo Tactix onto a winning performance on Monday night,” Hearn said.

Volunteering Canterbury will also have a stand at the game to help raise awareness of volunteering in Canterbury and to take donations to help voluntary groups.

Z’s ‘Good in the Hood’ programme gave away $1 million to community groups across New Zealand in March.

The Round 9 ANZ Championship match between the EasiYo Tactix and Northern Mystics at the CBS Canterbury Arena is on Monday 28 April from 7.40 pm.
The Tactix game will be preceded by the College Netball knock-out competition South Island playoff from 6.00pm.
