Zane Carney joins the bill
Zane Carney – guitarist for John Mayer – joins the bill with Rough Church and River’s Edge at UFO April 25
Referred to as "the best
guitarist in NY and LA" by U2's
Bono, Zane Carney is the lead
guitarist of rock quartet Carney - and
rhythm guitarist in John Mayer's band. At
this year's Bluesfest he debuted his solo material on the
MOJO stage at 4pm before taking the stage with John
Mayer later that evening. We are very happy to
announce that he’s supporting LA’s Rough
Church at New Lynn’s UFO on Friday April 25th.
‘Confluence’ is Zane Carney's much-anticipated debut record as a solo artist. An independently released 7 song EP, Confluences showcases Zane's strengths as a lead singer, songwriter and world-class guitarist while providing a fresh and revealing perspective of the young gunslinger behind LA's Rock Quartet CARNEY.
Zane has collaborated
with the likes of John Mayer, Justin Timberlake,
Bono and Edge and David Foster to
name a few. When CARNEY took a pause from touring so
Zane could join the original cast of Broadway's
Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark, Zane
discovered a calling hidden in plain slight; one that would
involve his voice.

Zane Carney will be one of the night’s supports for Los Angeles musical lynchpin - and passionate NZ music fan - Greg Franco’s band Rough Church. Greg is marking the 10-year anniversary of his New Zealand collaborations, first sparked by a spell here recording with Robert Scott and David Kilgour of the Clean in Dunedin in 2004.
By the time they arrive,
Rough Church will have just released a new
album on the Powertool label – capturing the spirit of our
busy modern lives, it’s titled ‘46 Missed Calls (Live at
KPFK)’, recorded half live at EStudio and the other half
recorded during a live broadcast on LA radio station
KPFK-FM, on the Mark Torres radio show (http://www.kpfk.org). A number
of the new songs feature lyrics penned by New Zealand poet
and Greg’s friend David Eggleton. Rough
Church live showcases the considerable talents of
Kaitlin Wolfberg on violin and keyboards
and Andy Sykora on drums/percussion.
Rough Church have also have a local
connection – for this tour they will be joined by
Wellingtonian Kedron Parker on bass, who
has shared countless bills with Franco for many years in
L.A. before she moved to Wellington in 2003.
Parker is currently known for her public art
sound installation Kumutoto Stream which runs
in the Woodward Street pedestrian tunnel in the Wellington
CBD. River’s Edge Saturday

Chris
Baigent, lead singer and songwriter for
River’s Edge, has been writing songs with
a distinct New Zealand flavour for the past 10 years - songs
influenced by homegrown musicians such as David
Kilgour, Chris Knox and The Clean;
with other influences including songwriters Neil
Young, Paul Kelly and Bob
Dylan.
Powertool Records recently released the
new River’s Edge album ‘Cambridge
Town’, inspired by Chris’ time in London and
then Cambridge in 2003/4, where he began writing whilst
studying Bob Dylan's entire record
collection. The new songs weave together poetry and stories
about his surrounding environment, inspired by the old
architecture and people of this busy university town. These
songs emerge from a fresh-faced “Kiwi” experiencing life
abroad for the first time; and Chris says, “I guess you
could call this album my ‘thesis on Dylan’”. And, most
appropriately, Baigent is now living in New
Zealand's own Cambridge.
