ZOMBIE: RED ZONE GAMING
25th April – 17th May 2014, Cathedral Square, Christchurch
A thrilling mash up of immersive theatre and live gaming that casts players in their own real life Zombie experience
where they complete a series of challenges for a chance to win prizes takes place from April 25th, as Zombie: Red Zone Gaming comes to Christchurch hot from its debut at this year’s Big Day Out.
An “expansion pack” to the immersive theatre show Zombie: Red Zone, Red Zone Gaming will be running parallel to this work and will start at the Game Control Centre in Cathedral Square - with games running at 10am and 4pm, organizers have indicated that players should arrive to the control centre 30
minutes prior to this game time.
Zombie: Red Zone is the brain-child of David Van Horn and former Christchurch local Simon London, and was a smash hit upon its Auckland
debut in 2013 (under its original title Apocalypse Z), fostering a new audience that usually isn’t a familiar feature in the world of theatre; regular young men aged
between 13 and 30.
The expansion, originally titled The Big Way Out during its debut at the Big Day Out earlier this year, played out as part treasure hunt and part orienteering course,
asking participants to solve clues set amongst the backdrop of zombies - with the prize at the BDO a chance to watch
Pearl Jam side of stage.
The magnitude of the immersive gaming’s popularity stretched Royale Production’s resources to their limits at the event;
with crowds of people having to be turned away and the majority of “gamers” being female, the team once again
demonstrated the popularity of this immersive form of role playing theatre.
Now Christchurch can enjoy both elements, running side-by-side next week, asZombie: Red Zone and Zombie: Red Zone Gaming make their debuts outside of Auckland.
Zombie: Red Zone Gaming is supported by the Christchurch City Council under their Ever Evolving Events brand. Ever Evolving Events aims to
enliven the Central City through the delivery of vibrant and innovative events that provide opportunities for the
Christchurch public to reconnect with the central city.
