Students eager to take their sport to the next level

Students from around greater Wellington proved that having a disability was no barrier to enjoying sport last week during the College Sport Wellington Sports Tabloid Day. Students with disabilities participated in floorball, futsal, indoor bowls and netball at the Sports Tabloid Day held at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie on Wednesday 9 April.

Attending from across the Wellington region students representing Heretaunga College, Hutt Valley High School, Mahinawa School, Mana School, Newlands School, Onslow College, Rongotai College Upper Hutt College, Wainuiomata High School and Wellington High School were coached by staff from Special Olympics New Zealand, ASB Sports Centre, Capital Football, Netball New Zealand and New Zealand Indoor Bowls.

“It was a great day. The students appeared to have a really fun time. The students saw first-hand what sporting opportunities are on offer through Special Olympics New Zealand, ASB Sports Centre and the other sports on display. Our aim is to transition more students from our Schools Programme into our Clubs Programme, which offers sports training across 13 Olympic-style sports.” says Steeven Sharpe, Regional Sports Coordinator—Lower North Island South, Special Olympics New Zealand.

“The event was a great example of partnership working with College Sport Wellington, Special Olympics New Zealand, ASB Sports Centre, Capital Football, Netball New Zealand and New Zealand Indoor Bowls coming together. I am particularly grateful to John Hornal, Chief Executive of College Sport Wellington and David Hibberd, Programmes Team Leader of ASB Sports Centre, and his team, who not only hosted but did a tremendous job on the day by providing superb assistance.”
