Tsunami advisory cancelled:
The tsunami experts panel (TEP) has convened and they are advising that there is not likely to be a tsunami threat for
New Zealand. This is based on the revised magnitude (Mw 7.6), and depth of the earthquake. Some caution will still have
to be given regarding potentially strong, unpredictable currents around coastal areas of New Zealand. This includes
areas around the northwest part of the North Island, and based on past experience along the west coast of the South
Island (e.g. Greymouth, Westport). Travel times to the northern end of the North Island are approximately 4 hours, and
to the west coast of the South Island approximately 6 hours. We strongly advise caution over the next 24-48 hours.
