The sun was scorching, the music was pumping and the food was scrumptious at the second Fritter Festival held at Toll
Stadium on Saturday 29th March.
This year was the first time that The Apprentice, NorthTec was involved with help students doing the National
Certificate in Hospitality (Basic Cookery) (Level 3) with help from their tutors.
The NorthTec Fritter of the day was a mussel fritter with sour cream and chilli jam served on a slice of bread. We also
did a BBQ beef rump with horseradish mayo and mesculin leaves served in a pita pocket.
I tried both of these and they were delicious and filling. I also tried some home- made ice blocks by Arana that were
scrumptious. I had a Banoffee on a stick, which someone thought I was eating fried chicken on a stick which was funny.
The other one I tried was a dark chocolate dip, creamy coconut and real strawberry.
The atmosphere was exciting and relaxed with people walking, sitting, chatting, and dancing with great big smiles on
their faces. The kids were enjoying the giant water slide down the hill opposite the grandstand and the bouncing castle.
Our students’ biggest buzz of the day was selling out and the watching people enjoying their fritters adding to the cool
atmosphere of the day. The students also enjoyed being part of the festival and not just one of the crowd. Another
highlight was meeting Brett McGregor the first Master Chef winner who was the judge for the Fritter Festival. What a
great job to have, tasting all the tasty fritters of the day.
This year the winners were Absolute Caterers who took out both people’s choice and Master Chef Judges’ choice.
Our team is already planning and looking forward to next year’s Fritter Festival, so watch out for us at Fritter
Festival 2015.
