Conservation work to begin on war mural

The famous war mural in the Hall of Memories at the Hastings War Memorial Library is to undergo preventive conservation treatment starting Friday April 4th.

The Hall of Memories and Civic Square entrance to the library will be closed while the scaffolding is erected on Friday morning.

Hastings District Councillor Tania Kerr says “A professional conservator has been commissioned to assess the condition of the mural and undertake any repair work that may be necessary.”

Tania Kerr says “I remember visiting the library as a young child and being amazed at this piece of artwork. It is important that it is maintained in pristine condition and the conservation treatment is scheduled on a regular basis to ensure the integrity and long term preservation of this irreplaceable artwork.”

The mural, painted in 1959 and listed as a public artwork, was designed and painted by war artist Peter McIntyre. The mural depicts an assault by the joint branches of the armed forces on an unspecified beach.
