International Rally of Whangarei - Night stage on Pohe Island
The International Rally of Whangarei returns later this month with a number of new competitive tests including the
Saturday night running of the Hella Pohe Island Super Special Stage.
The action around William Fraser Memorial Park on Pohe Island offers something for everyone with the Lions Club hosting
a family fun day topped off with the night time ‘super special stage’ onSaturday 12 April.
Whangarei District Council Economic Development Manager Peter Gleeson said the rally is a hugely popular event in the
District. Last years’ event directly boosted our economy by $2.8million and we expect a similar impact again this year.
“The rally has a huge following and is televised and captured by the international media. People come from all over the
country and the world to compete and watch.
“The global television coverage reaches Australia, India, China, Japan and Europe and is worth an estimated $2.78
million so it really is great promotion for our District.
“Visitors relish our scenery, climate and hospitality and have a good time exploring our District and each visitor
provides a positive boost for our economy by spending locally on accommodation, restaurants and activities,” he said.
“This is the first rally since the opening of the Lower Hatea River Crossing and we will be closing Te Matau a Pohe to
marine traffic exceeding 6.5m on Saturday 12 April 2014 from 3pm to 10pm.

“The dog park will also be closed during this time.
“Those keen to get an early look at the cars and teams can watch the cars parade through central Whangarei at lunchtime
on Friday 11 April.
“The Rally of Whangarei brings international sporting excellence to our doorstep so take the opportunity to get out
there and have a look,” Mr Gleeson said.
