Artists invited to decorate Chorus cabinets
Artists are being given the opportunity to design a set of murals that will be painted on Chorus roadside cabinets around Hastings.
Chorus’s cabinet art programme began in Auckland in 2010 and has since been extended to Wellington, Nelson, Hutt Valley, Dunedin, Upper Hutt, Christchurch and Kapiti Coast. Nine cabinets located in Hastings, Flaxmere and Havelock North have been identified by Chorus as being suitable for murals and Hastings District Council has identified another which will complete the ten cabinet project.
Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers says “This is an exciting project and we are grateful to Chorus for bringing the programme to Hastings. The ten cabinets that have been chosen have all been the target of regular graffiti attacks and we are hopeful that there will be less tagging once the murals have been completed.”
Cynthia Bowers says “There are some extremely talented artists in Hawke’s Bay and it will be exciting to see the designs that are submitted for consideration.”
Chorus Community Relations Advisor Jo Seddon says “Artists can submit their own designs for the cabinet art programme. The images should be reflective of the area were the cabinet is located. There have been some amazing designs painted on cabinets around the country and we are looking forward to seeing the style of Hawke’s Bay artists.”
Designs can be submitted from Tuesday April 1st and the closing date is Tuesday April 15th. The designs will be selected for each of the cabinets and then sent to Chorus for approval. It is expected that painting will begin on May 1st with a completion date of June 10th.
Designs can be emailed to wendymb@hdc.govt.nz or delivered to the Hastings District Council Service Centre, 207 Lyndon Road East Hastings.
