Kua puta i Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori ētahi kupu e 50 hei ako mā te motu nui tonu i ētahi wiki e 50, mai i Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.

E whai ana te mahi nei ki te whāngai i ētahi kupu e 50 ki ngā tāngata katoa o Aotearoa.

Hei tā Pita Paraone, te Tumuaki Takawaenga o Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori, “Kua whakaarohia te whakamahi me te whakahua i ngā kupu nei, kāore e roa ka mau.”

E hono ana ngā kupu ki tētahi wāhi, ki te kai, ki te kaupapa, ki te aha. Ko tā ngā rōpū he kimi ara whakaū i te kupu:

- Te kōkuhu atu i te kupu ‘maumahara’ ki ngā mahi katoa mō te ANZAC 2015, arā, kia kawea te kupu nei i tēnei o ngā kaupapa ki ngā reo e rua.

- kia puta te kupu ‘āpōpō’ i ngā kaipāho huarere, kia kitea anō i ngā whakairoiro ina pāhotia ngā huarere o āpōpō.

- Te hoatu i te kupu ‘heihei’ me ētahi atu kupu kai ki ngā rārangi kai o ngā whare kai, ki ngā pae o ngā hokomaha, ki hea, ki hea.

Hei tā Paraone, “Mā te āta whāngai i ngā kupu nei ki tētahi whā miriona tāngata o Aotearoa, kua whai huarahi ako rātou i te reo Māori,” hei tā Paraone.

“He takahanga tuatahi tēnei i roto i te whāinga kia reorua te motu nui tonu, ka mutu he tuatahi tēnei i te ao.”

Ka tīmata te Kupu o te Wiki ā te 21 o Hōngongoi 2014, ka 50 wiki te roa. Ka noho mai ā-rorohiko nei he kōrero e whakatauira ana i te whakahua me te whakamahi i te kupu, tae atu ki tētahi pānui whakaahua me ētahi atu rauemi.

Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori releases kupu for 50 week campaign

Te Taura Whiri i te Reo has released 50 Māori words for the motu to learn over 50 weeks from Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.

This ‘Te Kupu o te Wiki’ campaign aims to teach 50 Māori words to all New Zealanders.

“With these 50 kupu Māori we’ve considered usability, pronunciation, and kupu that are easy to learn and remember,” says Pita Paraone, Acting CE for Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori.

The words link to places, food, events etc. We’re asking groups to embed certain kupu in different ways:

- incorporating maumahara (remember) into all aspects of the 2015 ANZAC commemorations, ensuring a bilingual component.

- weather broadcasters to use āpōpō (tomorrow) in graphics or verbally when forecasting tomorrow’s weather.

- Putting heihei (chicken) and other kai related words on the menu in food outlets, on the supermarket shelf etc.

“By sharing these words with more than four million New Zealanders, we give them an important Māori language learning tool,” says Paraone.

“These are small steps in building a bilingual nation and the campaign is a world first.”

Te Kupu o te Wiki begins 21 July 2014 and lasts for 50 weeks. The campaign will provide online audio files to support pronunciation, sample sentences, a poster and other resources.
