Miss Mossman (NZ) Stays Strong in NZ Oaks

An upset was caused by Miss Mossman (NZ) (Mossman) in the Group 1 $300,000 Wellfield New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at Trentham with punters letting the filly start at $24.50 with the TAB.

Trainer John Sargent, in partnership with Hayden Allen in New Zealand, picked up his second Oaks victory of the season following the Group 1 VRC Oaks win by fellow Karaka graduate Kirramosa (NZ) (Alamosa).

The daughter of Mossman carried solid form entering the race having finished second behind race-favourite Miss Selby (NZ) (O’Reilly) in the Group 3 Lowland Stakes at her previous start and had competed against the best fillies throughout the season.

Jockey Johnathon Parkes positioned Miss Mossman perfectly early in the running over the 2400m staying distance, placing her fifth on the rail with Miss Selby on her outside. Parkes was able to get a jump on Miss Selby around the corner and sprinted to the lead halfway down the straight.

Lightning Strikes Twice for Natuzzi (NZ)

Talented South Island sprinter Natuzzi (NZ) (Coats Choice) dashed to his second consecutive win in the Listed $50,000 Sakhee’s Secret Melbourne Racing Club Lightning Handicap (1200m) at Trentham on Saturday.

Trained by Paul Richards at Wingatui, last year’s Lightning Handicap winner had to carry equal top weight to victory on Saturday. Natuzzi has shown his liking for Trentham, finishing second in the Group 1 Telegraph Handicap earlier this season.

The South Island Sale graduate’s win was also timely for the Sale which he was purchased at with catalogues for the South Island Sale released last week. The Sale will be held on 13 April in a move from the Sale’s traditional selling time in August.

Ridden by Chris Johnson, the five-year-old gelding was eased back from his barrier draw of 8 to find the rails and was able to improve to mid-field in the running over the 1200m sprint.

Costa Viva Crowned NZB Filly of the Year

Connections of Costa Viva (Encosta de Lago) had a few anxious moments watching the Group 1 Wellfield New Zealand Oaks on Saturday but could celebrate at the end of the day as their filly was crowned New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year by a narrow margin.

Costa Viva was successful in the Group 1 NZB 1000 Guineas on her way to being crowned NZB Filly of the Year.

The Te Akau Racing galloper established an early lead in the Filly of the Year Series with victory in the Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas and built her lead to 20.5 points throughout the season with her consistent form.

The daughter of Encosta de Lago did not compete in the Group 1 NZ Oaks on Saturday after being sent to the spelling paddock by trainer Jason Bridgman after running third in the Group 3 Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham in January.

There was only one filly that had a chance to run down Costa Viva with victory in the Group 1 NZ Oaks on Saturday, which was race-favourite Miss Selby (NZ) (O’Reilly) who tried gallantly but could only manage second in the race which to her took her Series tally to 19 points, 1.5 points shy of Costa Viva.
