15-year-old Nakita Turner releases anti-bullying music video today
Nakita Turner’s (15) two-year dream to address the issue of bullying becomes a reality today as the “One Voice” song and
music video is released.
Nakita’s “One Voice” project has spanned two years, five countries and involved hundreds of young people and industry
professionals. The inspiring music video is now available for viewing at http://onevoice.net.nz, with the single also available for free download and radio play.
“I know exactly what if feels like to be bullied,” says project leader Nakita Turner. “It stopped me from doing things
that I loved and it’s also stopping others from reaching their full potential.”
Nakita’s “One Voice” project began when, at 13, she interviewed 180 young people from six Christchurch schools about
their experiences of bullying. With mentorship from the band Dukes, she collated these experiences into a song.
Award-winning film editor Katie Hinsen (based in New York) organised the shooting of a music video by film professionals
and a local Christchurch studio gifted the recording.
Nakita auditioned a youth choir and secured the involvement of artists Massad and Restoration. The “One Voice” song and
music video was a collaboration that saw both film professionals and young people behind the sound desk and camera.
Members of Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post Production edited the video and popular artistKristina Webb, who has near 1
million Instagram followers, provided the artwork. Throughout the project around thirty mentors from all over New
Zealand and the world were on hand to teach, guide, and open doors.
“I’m so grateful to these guys for coming onboard with the idea and supporting the project all the way,” says Nakita.
“Right from the beginning this project was about raising awareness of the bullying issue and my hope is that this song
will help change people’s attitudes towards bullying.”
