Gala reopening planned for Flaxmere Community Centre
A major refurbishment of the Flaxmere Community Centre will culminate in a gala reopening on Friday 28th March.
The refurbishment included the construction of a new foyer, which will become the entrance to the Community Centre and the Flaxmere Library. Extended gym facilities, two new recreational spaces, improved ventilation and new toilets are just some of the other improvements to the facility.
The public is invited to attend the opening gala between 5pm and 7pm on Friday 28th March. The event will include the unveiling of a pou and a celebration of art work produced by students from local schools. Musical entertainment will be provided by school groups, along with the top performers from the recent Flaxmere Festival talent quest.
Flaxmere Councillor Henare O’Keefe says “The redevelopment has made an enormous difference to the Community Centre and I am sure this will attract even more people to the facility. The centre is seen as a focal point for youth in Flaxmere, and I am delighted that Council has provided the funding to allow the development to be completed.”
Fellow Councillor Jacoby Poulain says “The Community Centre is recognised as being an extremely valuable asset for the people of Flaxmere and the wider community. The provision of recreation facilities is very important for the youth of our district, and the new recreational spaces will ensure that the centre meets its commitment to the community for years to come.”
The project also included the refurbishment of part of the Flaxmere Library, which included an extension to the building and the addition of new meeting space.
The Community Centre closed in September 2013 to allow the $1.5m refurbishment to begin while the Flaxmere Library closed in early October
NOTE: The Community Centre is located alongside the Flaxmere Library and includes a sports hall, meeting rooms, a gym, and a climbing wall. The centre includes recreation and meeting areas for groups from within the Flaxmere Community while the climbing wall and sports floor provides sporting facilities for use by the wider community.
