New rhythm and sound for Tikorangi

The rhythm and sound of southern Africa will resonate from Tikorangi tomorrow (Wed, 12 March).

Mokoomba, an exuberant young band from Zimbabwe, will be in school to stomp out some fresh moves and sassy rhythm with children from Tikorangi and Huirangi schools in a WOMAD workshop.

Children will learn lyrics and dance moves with the group and then perform in front of parents and community members.

The show forms part of the WOMAD community programme which aims to bring the festival to a wide audience, not just those who attend the three-day festival, on this weekend in New Plymouth.

Sponsored by Todd Energy, chief executive Paul Moore said: “An important part of our WOMAD sponsorship is to help make the event as accessible as possible to people who live in the Taranaki region, and because our operations are located in Tikorangi, for the past three years we have taken an international WOMAD artist to Tikorangi School to perform with the children. This year we also involved Huirangi School students. This to us is a big part of what WOMAD is about - bringing people and communities together to enjoy something just a little bit different.

The schedule for tomorrow is:
10.30am – 12.45pm: Workshops with Tikorangi and Huirangi schools.
2pm – 2.30pm: Performance with Mokoomba
Venue: Tikorangi School, 356 Ngatimaru Road, Waitara.
