New novel by David Nicholls, author of international bestseller One Day, to publish this Spring
David Nicholls is one of today’s most talented, versatile and bestselling writers. His novel One Day was an international publishing phenomenon. It has sold over 5m copies around the world, published in over forty languages and spent years on bestseller lists worldwide. A new David Nicholls novel is a major event.
Us by David Nicholls, publishing on 30 September 2014, tells the story of Douglas Petersen, whose marriage of twenty-one years to Connie is almost over. When Autumn comes around, their son Albie will leave for college. Connie has decided to leave soon after.
But there's still the summer holidays to get through - a Grand Tour of Europe's major cities - and over the course of the journey, Douglas devises a plan to win back the love of his wife and repair his troubled relationship with his son. Forced to understand why his marriage is in tatters, he looks back to the beginning of their relationship and learns once again whom he fell in love with.
Us is the history of a family, recounted over the course of what may well be their final weeks together. It's a comedy about the demands of living together, about parenthood, about the relationship between reason and emotion, art and science, parents and children, middle-age and youth.
Covering nine countries and twenty-five years, Us is epic and intimate, funny and heartbreaking. No-one can write as brilliantly, poignantly and hilariously as David Nicholls about love, life and loss. His many fans will not be disappointed.
David Nicholls explains that part of the inspiration for the book “came from publicising One Day throughout Europe, visiting all the extraordinary places that I'd have loved to have seen as a back-packing teenager but never got the chance”.
“So Us is a road-trip, with all the pleasures and disasters of a long, difficult journey,” he says. “It's a love story of course, and I hope there's the same mixture of comedy and drama that I've strived for in the other books. But it's also about family - the bond of marriage and the demands of parenthood.”
David Nicholls is the author of best-selling novels Starter for Ten and One Day. He is also a screen writer, and most recently wrote a highly acclaimed original drama for BBC1 called The 7:39 and adapted Far From the Madding Crowd for cinematic release. He has also adapted both Starter for Ten and One Day for film.
Us by David Nicholls will be published on 30 September 2014 in hardback by Hodder & Stoughton.
