GODZone Teams Go the Distance on Day Three of Epic Journey
GODZone adventure has proven to be a showcase of iconic South Island scenery as day three unfolds on the epic seven day journey around the region of Kaikoura.
Team Seagate led by Nathan Fa avae continue to add distance between themselves and chasing teams with a decisive lead going into the second trekking section in the race this morning.
“Overnight the top three teams raced through the 151 km Molesworth bike ride with Nathan Fa avae and his band of merry teammates in the clear lead position,” says Race Director Warren Bates.
The 38km trek over the Glynn Wye Range near Hamner Springs offers up some tricky navigation as these teams start to tire after two solid days of racing.”
Seagate entered the trek around 3am five hours ahead of estimated fast times and are an expected to reach the Hurunui River inflatable canoe section later this afternoon.
“They are looking steady at this stage to make it onto the river before the dark zone at8.30pm tonight which is what their strategy appears to be,” says Bates. “A few hours on the water before that dark zone will set them up nicely for tomorrow.”
Nelson’s Dan Moore’s team Absolute Wilderness continues in second place having arrived at the Glynn Wye transition point this morning. In third place is Christchurch’s Sia Svendson’s team Aventure de Vida.
“Interesting to note that most of the team members in our lead three teams are all from the greater Nelson and Tasman region. This showcases the amazing depth and strength this area has for adventure racing,” says Bates.
Many of the mid field teams camped out overnight on Mt Tapuae O Uenuku and the Clarence valley below. Australian teams Rubicon led by David Barlow and Fully Rad to the Power Sick led by Irene Hunt are bringing up the rear and about to start their ascent of the mountain.
“Today we will see the division in the field widen as the bulk of teams finally manage to get over that mountain while our front runners race at least 240km ahead of them.”
