“None of them ever thought it would come to this. That they would pay money to go to a dinner, solely for the chance to
meet someone. They’ve all brought with them the baggage of failure, pain, hurt, rejection. Tonight - in their
eyes----humiliation.”
And that is how the play begins - the waiter addressing the audience directly and introducing the table of six. Three
women and three men who are, at that very moment, coming to grips with the realisation that their lives have been
reduced to paying to attend singles dinners in the hope of meeting someone as desperate as themselves. Each has recently
lost their spouse, either to death or to infidelity or simply boredom and has left them divorced of all self-belief and
facing the complexities of a dating game where the rules have completely changed since they were young.
THE DIRECTOR – JULIAN HARRISON
Theatre has always been Julian’s life since he started doing classes and productions at the age of five. He left school
and home at fifteen to pursue his passion further and had both a diploma and a degree in the Performing Arts before he
was twenty. Since graduating from drama school he has been working fulltime in theatre as an actor, director and teacher
of performing arts. He has been involved in over sixty shows either as an actor or a director. Recent shows includeSome Girls, The Birthday Boy, As You Like It, Peninsula and The Cat’s Meow at Howick Little Theatre where he also directed the very popular production of Looking. Julian says “The staging of this production and where we travel from here is anything but simple. The plot premise for
Take a Chance on Me is the perfect setup for a two hour moveable feast on the chaos our lives can become. What ensues is
a smorgasbord of chuckle, snort and cringe with a healthy serving of gasp on the side. Its staging demands, and the
breaking of more traditional theatre conventions, is not what I would normally associate with a Roger Hall.”
